Maybe I should point out the obvious

Is there freedom of speech in France? Is there freedom of speech in Italy? Is there freedom of speech in Spain? Is there freedom of speech in Portugal?

Yes.

And they didn't have to become Protestant to get it.

How about in the United States?

During the Cold War could you buy Marxist and Communist tracts in mainstream bookstores? Nope.

But the Communist Parties of France and Italy not only existed but had huge numbers, and even participated in government.

Obviously you could buy their literature in France and Italy, Catholic countries which are supposedly less free because they never experieneced the Reformation.
