How do you take a public opinion poll in country where a war is being fought?

That's the question I have about the poll cited by Berube showing that 83% of Afghan's have a favorable opinion of the presence of U.S. troops in Afghanistan.

Other facts from the poll, which was taken in January 2006, that aren't emphasized on the web page: 68% of people had a positive opinion of Hamid Karzai and 55% thought that the central Aghan government is doing a good job. My understanding is that the central Afghan government is non-existent outside of Kabul.
