First gay man in Alabama elected...to school board

I was waiting for the other shoe to drop in this one. The headline said that this guy was the first elected official in Alabama who was openly gay, but it didn't specify just what office he'd been elected to--which is always a sign that people are covering up something. Turns out that, yes, Alabama has elected its first gay official and he represents his district on the Birmingham school board. Although I applaud him for getting elected and see the progress I can't help but think that this is a sign of how fucked up Alabama is. Maybe Mississippi will follow suit and declare that it's found that it has one openly gay employee on a city employment roll someplace, thereby proving its openness.
