Chavez measure narrowly defeated

50.7 to 49.3. The New York Times has a revealing quote: "The results were all the more surprising given that Mr. Chávez and his supporters control nearly all of the levers of
power." Looks like......they don't. Which shouldn't be a surprise to people who actually know something about Venezuela. The referendum went down in defeat this time, but given time to revamp and shore up some more support, I'm hoping that the socialists down there will be able to successfully pass a similar measure in the future.

*on edit: Chavez has conceded defeat, thereby letting down opponents in the U.S. who no doubt wanted to cast Chavez as a dishonest dictator who ignored the will of the people.
