Interesting thing about West Virginia

The state that's having its primary on Tuesday, West Virginia has only been in existence since the Civil War. Because of opposition to the confederacy West Virginia split from what was just Virginia, forming its own state. Other notable secession movements or at least movements that have tried to rewrite the political landscape include the formation of Vermont, which was originally a part of New York State but split off early after independence and became its own Republic for a little while, and Texas, although Texas came into being by the seizure of parts of northern Mexico by force by Anglo settlers who had been granted land in the area by the Mexican government.
