A message to Paul Constant of The Stranger regarding his recent review of the new Thomas Pynchon book
Named "Inherent Vice". I'm a Thomas Pynchon fan too, so I'm not going to destroy your review over this, but there was one phrase there....you described the interior monologue of the main character as making "Vice a tone poem constructed from American cultural detritus.." Well...come on now. I know you like the book but don't you think that describing this part as a "tone poem" is going a little too far, laying it on a little too thickly? I know exactly what you're talking about, but don't you think that elevating this stuff to Joycean heights is a little excessive?
